Bethesda Explains Its Review Copy Policy

Bethesda Explains Its Review Copy Policy

Have you noticed some companies getting review copies out later than expected? Like, you think you’ll be reading reviews online with enough lead time where you can pre-order or cancel a pre-order. But some companies don’t play that way. Bethesda’s been doing that more and more lately, and now it’s put up a statement explaining why it will only provide review copies of games one day ahead of launch.

Since this is a statement you have to see to believe, let’s go to an exact quote from Gary Steinman, Bethesda’s Global Content Lead. “At Bethesda, we value media reviews. We try to learn from them when they offer critique. And we understand their value to our players. While we will continue to work with media, streamers, and YouTubers to support their coverage – both before and after release – we want everyone, including those in the media, to experience our games at the same time. We also understand that some of you want to read reviews before you make your decision, and if that’s the case we encourage you to wait for your favorite reviewers to share their thoughts.” It did this with DOOM and will continue the practice with Dishonored 2 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition . The latter of which is basically a remastered port of a five year old game.

Kotaku pointed out how hypocritical Bethesda’s move is. Despite Bethesda saying it wants people to experience games at the same as the reason for this decision, it gave Grohlvana an early copy of Skyrim Special Edition . He’s had it for about a month now. So much for their alleged “equality” explanation.
