Pokemon Sun & Moon Introduce Alola’s Guardians

Pokemon Sun & Moon Introduce Alola’s Guardians

Another week, another tantalizing drip-feed of Pokemon Sun & Moon information. The Pokemon Company has released yet another trailer for the game(s), this time featuring the final evolutions of starter Pokemon Popplio, Rowlet, and Litten. These adorable critters evolve into the fierce and fabulous Primarina (Water/Fairy), Decidueye (Grass/Ghost), and Incineroar (Fire/Dark), respectively. Most surprising is each Pokemon’s type combination, which differ from what early leaks first indicated. I can’t say I expected Incineroar to be anything other than a Fighting type, so this comes as a pleasant surprise.

The trailer also introduces Alola’s guardian Pokemon, each of whom acts as a patron saint for one of Alola’s four islands. In addition to the previously-revealed Tapu Koko, an Electric/Fairy Pokemon, the guardians include Tapu Lele (Psychic/Fairy), Tapu Bulu (Grass/Fairy), and Tapu Fini (Water/Fairy). All four resemble totem spirits, and share a super-powerful Z-Move called “Guardian of Alola.” Ever seen Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind ? Imagine one of those horrifying, featureless giants bearing down on you and slamming its fist into the ground, crushing you under the weight of its mighty existence. That’s what a Guardian of Alola looks like. The world of Pokemon is totally cheerful and not at all a nightmarish hellscape. Nope.

Other tidbits in today’s trailer include the return of Champions Red and Blue, now a touch older and more world-weary, as well as the reveal of a post-game area known as the “Battle Tree.” This new feature presents its own suite of challenges as the player battles alongside famous trainers from previous Pokemon generations. Oh Archie, where art thou?

The hype train keeps on rollin’ as Pokemon Sun & Moon approach their imminent release on November 18.
