Nintendo Wants to Pay You to Help Combat Piracy

Nintendo Wants to Pay You to Help Combat Piracy

Here’s an interesting story: Nintendo is soliciting help from “researchers” to help find security exploits in their 3DS family of systems. Their aim is to create a secure environment for their customers to enjoy games by eliminating potential vulnerabilities that could lead to information slippage or worse.

Nintendo is looking to prevent piracy, including game application dumping and copied game application execution. They also want to squash cheating, including game application modification and save data modification, as well as the potential dissemination of inappropriate content to children. You may recall that 3DS message-sharing service Swapnote was shut down for this very reason: a story came out that a man in Japan used the application to solicit “offensive material” from children over the Internet. This sort of misuse is something that Nintendo wants to actively prevent.

In collaboration with vulnerability coordination and bug bounty platform HackerOne, Nintendo is offering monetary rewards to those who can help them address potential issues with their 3DS systems. Bounties range from $100 all the way up to $20,000. For the full list of what Nintendo is requesting, you can view their page on HackerOne .
