Nintendo Switch Will Not Have Video Services at Launch

The Switch is less than two months away, but we’re still seeking concrete details on its online services and software support. Speaking to Nintendo, Jason Schreier at Kotaku recently received a few answers to our burning questions about the system’s functions, though most were met with silence.

For one, we now know that the Switch will not support Netflix, HBO Go, Hulu, or any other video apps at launch. When questioned, Nintendo replied, “All of our efforts have gone toward making the Nintendo Switch system an amazing dedicated video game platform, so it will not support any video-streaming services at launch. However, support for video-streaming services is being considered for a future update.” Some may see this as a problem, but between smart TVs, computers, and every other home console supporting most of these services, does it really matter? Only time and sales figures will tell, I suppose.

The same interview also confirmed that we’ll only be able to capture screenshots with the Switch’s share button, though video capture will be implemented at a later date. Furthermore, a Mii Maker will still be included on the system, though it’ll be tucked away within its system settings and will no longer be a focus for developers. While I’ve never minded Miis, I do appreciate Nintendo’s willingness to break away from them and devote their resources elsewhere. We’ll continue to report on more Switch details as we have them.
