John Smedley, former CEO of Sony Online Entertainment, has joined Amazon to head up a new studio based in San Diego. (Of course, you may better know Sony Online Entertainment as the Daybreak Game Company.) Amazon, in a statement, said, “His team is already hard at work on an ambitious new project that taps into the power of the Cloud and Twitch to connect players around the globe in a thrilling new game world.”
It’s important to note that Amazon not only owns Twitch, but also owns its own Cloud services known as Amazon Web Services. Whatever Smedley’s new studio is working on is certainly super far-off, but expect it to be tailor-made for Amazon-exclusive services. Also, don’t expect it to play nice with alternatives.
As a reminder, Smedley was one of the people behind the original EverQuest. While he was with Sony Online Entertainment/Daybreak, they made games like H1Z1 and PlanetSide.
