For Honor Has Staying Power with Steel Unlocks

For Honor is the relatively new hack-and-slash fighting game from Ubisoft that has samurai, knights and vikings battling each other for victory. Recently some new emotes were introduced, and players are already having tons of fun with that. It is possible to avoid attacks with a back flip, by the way! (And it looks awesome!) But all isn’t sunny.

A Redditor has done the math recently and discovered all the numbers behind For Honor ‘s Steel currency system. You use Steel, which can be bought with real money or earned through matches, to buy cosmetic unlocks like executions, outfits, emotes and more. New emotes right now cost 7,000 Steel, but you can only buy Steel in packs of 5,000 for $4.99. Therefore you either have to buy 5,000 Steel and get the difference in game, or you have to buy an 11,000 pack for $9.99. For Honor is already pay-to-play so having to pay this much more for something generally just cosmetic is frustrating players. But, it gets worse.

According to Reddit user bystander007, it’s 91,500 Steel to unlock a hero and all of their cosmetics and 1,098,000 Steel to unlock everything thus far. That’s $732, if you pay real money. There will be six more heroes in the For Honor season pass with their own items, which will bring the cost up to 1,647,000 Steel/ $1,100 total to unlock absolutely everything eventually. You’d have to either be making mad cash, or be a huge For Honor fan to shell out that much cash.

The positive thing is, you can grind for Steel in the normal game! But, bystander007 also worked out the cost of that in terms of your time. if you played For Honor for two hours every day and make around 1,200 Steel each day, it would take you 921 days (2.51 years) to unlock everything out now and 1,373 days (3.76 years) for the base and season pass heroes and items. Better get playing!
