Could Call of Duty Be Going Back to Its Roots?

Not long ago, an investor presentation from Activision said the Call of Duty series is going to return to its roots, after Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare underperformed. After seeing the futuristic setting didn’t resonate with fans, it seemed like Activision planned to dial it back a notch. Now that seems even more real, thanks to a series of alleged leaks showing artwork pointing the next Call of Duty taking place during World War II.

The leaks show key art (including packaging) for the next Call of Dut y. The title is part of it, and about as on the nose as you can get. The game, assuming the leaks are true, is simply called Call of Duty: WWI I. While the universe of Call of Duty actually tells a linear story in its own defined world, this could potentially signify a reboot of sorts for the franchise.

Back when the series was first based on World War II, it was simply Call of Duty , followed by numbers. Once Call of Duty: World at War hit, that was when the series began to take on a narrative identity and world of its own, headed into historical fiction territory. Could this be taking the series back to more accurate, history-based events or will we be seeing a new, more fictional take in line with the modern games?
