From the first time We Happy Few premiered at E3 2016, there was a lot of hubbub around it. Comparisons to other pop culture phenoms popped up, like BioShock or A Clockwork Orange . I’d personally like to err more towards the Stanley Kubrick comparison, what with the way characters in We Happy Few are convinced to mold to a societal expectation via forcible means. (Which is Joy drug, to be specific.) The comparison to A Clockwork Orange has a solid foot to stand on now, as it was recently discovered by Variety that We Happy Few is getting a film adaptation.
Some big names are associated with the project. Paul Brooks (Gold Circle), Dmitri M. Johnson (dj2 Entertainment), Dan Jevons (dj2), and Stephan Bugaj (dj2) are involved. The producers of the potential film project are known for their work on My Big Fat Greek Wedding , Pitch Perfect , Sleeping Dogs (the film), and the Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
The creators of We Happy Few seem to be very excited for this project, as head developer Guillaume Provost said, “Dmitri, Stephan, and Dan approached us enthusiastically with really solid ideas about how to adapt our game to film while retaining its menace, dark humor, and central themes.” We Happy Few is still in Early Access on Steam, so you can play it now, but the main narrative will not be available until its full release. No news on when that may be yet, so the race is on for the game to release before the film does.
