Square Enix CEO Wants the Switch to Be a Success

Square Enix CEO Wants the Switch to Be a Success

Square Enix may have dropped the ball on Nintendo support on the Nintendo 64, but has only been becoming a stronger ally with each passing year. In an interview with Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda, we’ve learned some of the reasoning behind the strengthening of that relationship. When asked about new platforms like the Switch and Microsoft’s Scorpio, Matsuda said that Square Enix is focusing the most on Nintendo’s new hybrid console, as he thinks more platforms on the market means more options for people developing games. He specifically noted that he wants the Switch to be a success.

Square Enix has already announced unique software for the platform and is supporting it early on with ports of games like I am Setsuna as well. Driving support to a new platform in this way is a very deliberate strategy, and the “more platforms means more content” sort of approach is fascinating long-term thinking.

Square Enix is also looking at changing the way it approaches mobile markets, and supporting their games more long-term with DLC schedules to boost sales over time. Good for them for trying to make a difference!
