Gamestop Hit with Potential Credit Card Data Breach

Gamestop Hit with Potential Credit Card Data Breach

If you buy stuff from major video game retailer GameStop’s online store, you may want to check your credit card statements and change your passwords. According to blog KrebsOnSecturity, written by Brian Krebs (a former Washington Post reporter), GameStop has been compromised. The specific window of time appears to be between September 2016 and February 2017. The blog claims “two sources in the financial industry” have both made this claim. GameStop, while not yet acknowledging whether or not this breach actually happened, has responded to the claim quite seriously.

In a statement, GameStop said, “GameStop recently received notification from a third party that it believed payment card data from cards used on the GameStop.com website was being offered for sale on a website. That day a leading security firm was engaged to investigate these claims. GameStop has and will continue to work non-stop to address this report and take appropriate measures to eradicate any issue that may be identified.”

In the meantime, GameStop customers should definitely do a sweep through their protected information and report any fraudulent charges to their banks immediately.
