GTA Online Exploit Leads to Millions in In-Game Theft

GTA Online Exploit Leads to Millions in In-Game Theft

GTA Online players on PC and last-gen consoles are dealing with a pretty huge problem. An exploit currently spreading is allowing cheating players to rob others of in-game cash. Reportedly millions of in-game dollars have been stolen so far. Hackers are also now able to give illegitimate RP to other players as well.

Before this GTA Online exploit, hackers were around, but not able to mess with the game on such a huge scale. They could spawn rare vehicles or other random objects and cause money drops as well. But thanks to a new piece of third-party software, “mod menus” are making things awful for legitimate players.

The biggest problem, according to mod menu users, is how easy it is to use the software for this exploit. It’s so easy that, despite its relative rarity right now, it has the potential to spread like a virus until the whole ecosystem of GTA Online is at risk. This is especially scary, since legitimate players are targets in this situation, and outside meddling with their accounts can get them banned from the game despite no wrongdoing on their part.

Luckily, Rockstar has said it is aware of the issue and has given it its own support page. Rockstar being Rockstar, the shelf life on this GTA Online exploit is likely small. However, many players are refusing to play until the matter is resolved, so who knows what kind of short and long-term effects this will have on GTA Online when the dust settles.
