It Looks Like Kingdom Hearts III Won’t Appear Until 2018 or Later

Not that this is super surprising, but fans of Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy shouldn’t be getting their hopes up about playing either new game until 2018 or later. Square Enix recently shared a document with its investors showing its release plans for its upcoming games, and not all of them have concrete dates.

The document is ties to fiscal years, of course, so keep that in mind. We see the 2017 fiscal year first, which includes Final Fantasy XV, Rise of the Tomb Raider and Kingdom Hearts 2.8 . These are all games that have already been released and are still getting updates. Fiscal year 2018 shows everything else coming up with a handful of release dates and a section for “beyond.”

Dragon Quest XI, Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, and the next “ Fortune Street ” are all set to be released in 2017. Beyond that are Kingdom Hearts III , the Final Fantasy VII remake and the “Marvel IP license.” These projects are still in the middle of development and are likely there to remind shareholders they’re still on track. That means we won’t see them until 2018 or quite possibly even later.

Not present is the Nintendo Switch project Square Enix has in the works or anything else we don’t already know about. Obvously, none of this is a confirmation of anything one way or another, but with Square Enix it’s always important to keep expectations realistic. A Final Fantasy XV situation isn’t likely to happen again anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean it can’t or won’t.
