Oculus VR Skipping E3 2017

Oculus VR Skipping E3 2017

For the first time since 2014, Oculus VR will not be attending E3 in an official capacity. Since E3 2014, Oculus VR has had booth space on the E3 show floor that has nearly doubled in size each year. Now it’s gone, and Oculus VR has not offered an explanation.

While the company won’t be representing itself, there’s also no indication the hardware won’t be around via software developers. We could see developers with their games appearing on the headset in their own booths.

E3 seems to be suffering from a trickling loss of support from big companies, with companies like EA and Activision as good examples. More and more companies are holding their own events or piggybacking on the tentpole press conferences during the show.

E3 is also opening the event up to the public this year, clearly looking for new sources of revenue. At this point the “is E3 in trouble?” discussion is a bit of a cliché, but something is not going right, and it probably has something to do with how wide-open the flow of information is. E3’s utility for big companies is likely dwindling at a fast pace.
