Call of Duty: WWII Includes Women in Multiplayer

Call of Duty: WWII Includes Women in Multiplayer

Being able to choose your gender when creating an online avatar is pretty much standard practice for Call of Duty , but a recent confirmation that same is in place for Call of Duty: WWII is causing some turbulence in the discourse. Sledgehammer Games’ Michael Condrey confirmed the feature, and a subsequent discussion of historical accuracy went to the usual places. As asked by Destructoid’s CJ Andriessen, “Should developers take a less historically accurate approach to games set in the early 1900’s for the sake of including women in roles they traditionally wouldn’t fill?”

Why not? It’s a multiplayer mode that has no bearing on the historical fiction of Call of Duty: WWII . It’s also worth noting that women have historically participated in warfare, sanctioned by non-US armies and otherwise. So there could be an opportunity to educate people about a little known part of WWII battle companies.

Ultimately, the Call of Duty: WWII single-player campaign is thoroughly dude-only, so nothing controversial is likely to take place there. I for one would love to explore additional perspectives from history than the norm, but we aren’t there yet.
