Nier: Automata PC Performance Mod Has a Piracy Check

Kaldaien’s “FAR mod” has been a pretty big deal for PC fans of NieR: Automata . To make a long story short, NieR: Automata ’s lighting engine takes up way more resources than it needs, and this mod helps it calm down a bit without compromising a ton of visual fidelity. Everyone rejoiced, but now a certain portion of the PC scene is upset, upon discovering the mod also checks to see if your copy of NieR: Automata is legitimate or not.

Upon installing FAR, it says, “Use of this software is granted on the condition that any products being modified have been licensed to you under the terms and conditions set forth by their respective copyright holders.” The software then checks whether or not your NieR: Automata has been pirated or not. It refuses to proceed if it is.

Kaldaien, while generally unsupportive of piracy in general, claims that this isn’t a moral stance. It’s actually a defense mechanism, as modding the game the way he has could mean Square Enix might hold him liable for any piracy involved, especially when it comes to the DLC. He said he “will not be thrown under the bus when some user uses my software to inject DLC they didn’t purchase.”

A huge wildfire broke out on the Steam forums, with people lashing out at Kaldaien and Kaldaien lashing right back, resulting in threads being deleted and Kaldaien himself being temporarily banned from Steam discussions. Kaldaien added fuel to the fire by adding a blacklist banning two Steam users in particular who harassed him on the forums from accessing the mod at all.

Regardless of what you think of piracy, it’s not a good luck to lash out at people who don’t support software you didn’t obtain legally. I don’t blame the guy for sticking to his guns.
