Hyperkin Introduces the Retron HD

Hyperkin Introduces the Retron HD

Hyperkin is a long-time maker of modern-retro hardware that lets enthusiast gamers play their old games without worrying about dying technology. I have a Retron 5, which plays several different kinds of retro games, all in one unit. However, in what seems like a response to the NES Classic Edition controversy, Hyperkin has revisited its original Retron concept with the Retron HD.

The Retron HD, despite its obvious Hyperkin branding, looks very similar to the NES Classic Edition, but with a real cartridge slot and NES-style controller ports. This is similar to the original Retron, a compact device that plays NES cartridges with modern, more stable parts, but this time it has an HDMI port for playing games on modern displays in 720p.

The Retron HD can play games at 720p and has its own switch to swap between 16:9 and 4:3 resolutions. It can play PAL and NTSC carts (via another switch) and comes with both an HDMI and AV cable. It will be available on May 25 and cost $49.99.

It’s interesting to see this concept revisited, considering the Retron 5 does this and more, but it is admittedly more affordable, and is obviously a calculated move to take advantage of the NES Classic Edition controversies. Ultimately it’s more of an investment since you need real NES carts to play, but anyone looking to build a retro collection can’t go wrong with Hyperkin’s hardware.
