Nintendo Details the Switch’s Online Service

Nintendo Details the Switch’s Online Service

Nintendo has been quiet about its upcoming online services, leaving many fans uneasy and eager to find out more. Ahead of E3, Nintendo has finally released a few more details; while not laying everything out, a few previous bits of vagueness have been cleared up.

For now, online play on Nintendo Switch will be free. But starting in 2018, the paid Nintendo Switch Online service will launch, and include some new features and benefits. For starters: Pricing. Nintendo Switch Online will be pretty cheap compared to the competition. A year-long subscription will cost 20 dollars, while 3 months at a time will be $7.99 and a monthly subscription will be $3.99.

While the free service just accounts for online play, once Nintendo Switch Online launches, paying members will gain access to a few extras. Nintendo will be launching a “Online Lobby & Voice Chat app.” It sounds like something similar to Discord, a chat service for online gaming groups that continues to rise in popularity.

Paying members will also receive occasional Nintendo eShop discounts and deals, as well as access to the “Classic Game Selection.” This is particularly interesting. Before, Nintendo made it seem like players would get one game a month, and that game would revert to needing a separate purchase after. Now, Nintendo is describing it as a “compilation of classic titles with added online play.” Listed as an example are Super Mario Bros. 3 , Balloon Fight and Dr. Mario . This sounds almost like a Netflix-type model, with multiple games available at one time.
