South Korea Makes Game Hacks Illegal

South Korea Makes Game Hacks Illegal

With how popular MMOs and eSports are in South Korea, you’d think the country would have some respect regarding not cheating. The opposite is actually true however, as rampant hacking has been a huge problem in the country. All the popular online games have been doing everything they can to combat this, but there’s only so much these companies can do on their own.

It’s been revealed, through online tipsters, that South Korea is going to be starting something very soon that they hope will help end this problem. Back in December, a anti-hacking law was passed. It will go into effect June 21. The law has some very broad statements, like how people are “not to perform acts that disturb the game distribution process or rules.” Obviously, releasing games before official release is now illegal, as well as game hacks that could be counted as cheating.

The law also includes the creation of distribution of private servers, however. This could be a big problem for games that are no longer supported by developers, as well as the modding community. However vague, the law is serious business since it can lead to fines of up to $50,000 or five years in prison.

Definitely makes you think twice about that easy cheat hack, doesn’t it?
