Arc System Works Is Making a Dragon Ball Fighting Game

Bandai Namco has announced Dragon Ball Fighters , a fighting game developed by Arc System Works set to appear for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC sometime in early 2018. Arc System Works is, of course, the developer behind Guilty Gear and BlazBlue . In a press release, Dragon Ball Fighters is described as a 2.5D, 3v3 fighter that will feature “ultra high-speed battles” and “flashy special moves,” both of which can certainly be attributed to the Dragon Ball property.

Producer Tomoko Hiroki is noted as saying that while most recent Dragon Ball fighters have been 3D (save for Extreme Butoden , which was also an Arc System Works project for 3DS), Arc System Works went for 2.5D due to certain things only achievable in that style. In a similar vein to Guilty Gear Xrd , Dragon Ball Fighters uses coloring and shading techniques to make 3D models look as close to 2D animation as possible, while incorporating various dynamic camera effects.

Gematsu also notes that the (Japanese) press release has a date of June 12, perhaps suggesting Bandai Namco accidentally jumped the gun by accident. Logic suggests this was one of the publisher’s unannounced titles for E3.
