E3 2017: Steam Direct Is Open for Business

E3 2017: Steam Direct Is Open for Business

Be sure to check out our E3 hub for 2017 all week long to get the latest gaming news, previews and announcements right from the convention floor!

Not long ago, we brought news of Steam Direct, the new service Valve is introducing to replace Steam Greenlight. Well that day has finally come. Valve has initiated Steam Direct, which is a new way for developers to get their games onto Steam. Rather than having to go through the Steam Greenlight voting process, developers can now submit to Steam Direct and go through a much more streamlined process of approval.

Developers will fill out some paperwork, including tax forms, pay a $100 fee, and they’ll have their game played by Valve employees for a day or two. Employees will be looking to make sure that games are configured correctly, that they match the store page description for the game, and that they don’t contain malicious content. The point is that this process of review will take much less time than Steam Greenlight voting did. The $100 fee is returned to developers after the game makes at least $1,000 on Steam. All-in-all, the process sounds very easy to navigate for developers new and old!

In preparation for the closure of Steam Greenlight and the opening of Steam Direct, Valve went through the 3,400 titles that remained in the system. In the process of reviewing these games, they greenlit almost all of them. The only titles that didn’t get a pass were those that had “insufficient voter data” or issues raised by voters. These games can still apply for Steam Direct.

What do you think about the new system? Going to try your hand at game developing?
