DDoS Attacks Hit Final Fantasy XIV Servers

DDoS Attacks Hit Final Fantasy XIV Servers

Square Enix recently launched a brand new expansion for Final Fantasy XIV . Stormblood became available on June 16 for pre-order customers and everyone was given access to the game on June 20. Unfortunately, those playing in North America have had problems with the servers from the very beginning.

Square Enix released information that explains why the servers have been so shoddy lately. As it turns out, the North American Final Fantasy XIV servers have been victim to DDoS attacks. They started on June 16, perfectly coinciding with the release of Stormblood . If you are unfamiliar with the term, here’s a quick explanation. A DDoS attack is a flood of access attempts that overload servers. Thus it causes all kinds of problems for those that are trying to actually play the game. It would seem that the third-party attackers behind this have been changing their methods constantly, which has made it difficult for the Square Enix technical team to correct it.

The publisher assures that they are doing everything they possibly can to find a solution to these attacks as soon as they are able. They also wanted to make it known that no personal information is at risk of release. This DDoS attack only bogs down the servers, it doesn’t give the attackers any information.
