Fan-made Halo Game Legally Safe

Fan-made Halo Game Legally Safe

Recently, fan-made game projects have been a source of controversy, often due to them being based on Nintendo properties. However, Microsoft has something called the “Game Content Usage Rules,” a policy built around allowing fans to use Microsoft-owned properties for personal use. Well, within certain parameters of course.

Installation 01 is a fan-made Halo game which has been in development for quite a while. Usually, as a fan-made project based on corporate IP nears release, the chances of it getting nailed with a DCMA takedown notice rapidly increase. However, the developer of Installation 01 recently revealed it reached out directly to 343 Industries, the current developer in charge of the Halo franchise.

According to the Installation 01 team and 343 Industries, the game is “not under immediate legal threat.” Under the Game Content Usage rules, as long as the project continues to be non-commercial and doesn’t make or ask for money related to the project, it’s good to go. The development team also announced it won’t be accepting donations or making merchandise either, just to be on the safe side.
