Rayman SNES Prototype Now Available

Rayman SNES Prototype Now Available

Earlier this year, Rayman creator Michel Ancel found an old prototype for Rayman. It is the version that never came out for the Super Nintendo. He posted some screenshots to Instagram and that was where the story ended, until now. Omar Cornut of Lizardcube got a hold of the prototype and has dumped it online for the public.

Cornut, who says he’s friendly with Ancel, said he simply asked the man to borrow it for the purpose of dumping the ROM file. Cornut, who recently served as director for Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap , has a history in digitally preserving old games.

The ROM file for the SNES version of Rayman is playable on emulators, but it is thoroughly an in-progress work. It’s largely a technical prototype that lets the player move around an area, but there are no enemies, items, level structure, or things of that nature. This ROM dump was definitely more about preserving a lost piece of history than having a game available to the public.
