First Ataribox Details Revealed

First Ataribox Details Revealed

Atari threw us all for a loop when the company announced plans to return to the home console market. And no, I’m not talking about plug and play Atari SKUs you can pick up at Toys R Us. Currently called the Ataribox, little is known about the new device, but Atari has revealed the design itself, showing off the look, as well as hinting at its capabilities by showing off the back of the unit.

Atari actually showed off two different versions of the Ataribox. There is one version inspired by the classic Atari consoles, with a wood panel on the front alongside Atari’s signature plastic ribs around the rest of the console. The other design has a black glass front, with a red logo as opposed to the classic white.

The interesting part is the Ataribox’s back end, which houses several different ports. It has the expected HDMI, but it also has an ethernet port, 4 USB ports, and a SD card slot. This, as Atari points out in its announcement, indicates some degree of modern software.

There are no details on the Ataribox’s specs, but Atari does specifically say the company plans to deliver “classic gaming content” and “current gaming content.” Is it an Android box? Something beefier? Will it be able to compete with the other major consoles? Who knows? We’ll know more as Atari plans to share details piece by piece in an effort to build traction.
