Free-to-Play Magic the Gathering: Arena Announced

Wizards of the Coast has been trying to figure out a digital alternative to Magic the Gathering for years. This includes several successful outings on the PlayStation Network. But now, the company has announced Magic the Gathering: Arena , a free-to-play digital platform that is designed to stay current with the legal sets available in the real-life card game.

Magic the Gathering: Arena is built to accommodate the current Magic the Gathering “standard,” which at this moment comprises over 1,000 cards. Magic the Gathering: Arena is also being built with streaming on Twitch and other platforms in mind, with events such as draft nights and pushing high-level, competitive play.

To that end, Wizards of the Coast is touting a new “Games Rules Engine” to future-proof the game for adding new cards. It claims the user interface is designed with easy and engaging spectating in mind. Magic the Gathering: Arena is still a ways off, but a closed beta is coming soon.
