PewDiePie Controversy Continues with an On-Stream Slur

It’s happening again. 2017 must be the Year of PewDiePie Discourse. This time, we’ve moved from rape jokes and Nazi humor to yelling racial slurs in frustration. This of course is making waves because of how popular and influential the YouTube personality, whose real name is Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg, is . PewDiePie has over 50 million subscribers.

This all went down on a public stream. PewDiePie was playing a game, got frustrated, and yelled the “n-word” at the offending player. Realizing quickly what he did, in as public and candid environment as you can get, there was a quick backpedal attempt with, “I don’t mean that in a bad way.”

What followed was a bunch of Internet Discourse, just like the last few times when PewDiePie was under fire for lame jokes about things like anti-Semitism and lost his gigs with Disney and YouTube Red. This time, Firewatch developer Campo Santo has publicly stated it will file DMCA claims against the streamer’s Firewatch -related content in response to the event. We’ll have to see what other effects this has on the streamer.
