It’s officially happening, the wave of games and game modes inspired by the overwhelmingly successful Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds is under way, starting with Epic Game’s Fortnite . Fortnite ’s new mode, simply called Fortnite Battle Royale , will be separated from the core game and made free to play starting on September 26.
Fortnite Battle Royale is a 100-player free for all mode that drops everyone on a single, large map. Fortnite ’s destructible environments and tower defense-like building mechanics will also be part of this mode. Epic Games states the game will be free, with cosmetics and “compendium-like content” will be on sale at a later date.
The September 26 launch date will also add squads to the game, as well as various bugs and user experience modifications. Fortnite Battle Royale will be a free download on all platforms: PS4, Xbox One and the Epic Games PC launcher.
In other Fortnite news, this announcement post also reveals more updates! The “Save the World” PvE campaign is still in Early Access, a Block Party mode is on the way, and some “spooky”content is headed to the game in October.
