Sony Exec Has Bad News for Vita Fans

Sony Exec Has Bad News for Vita Fans

Around the 2017 Tokyo Game Show, some rumors started floating about suggesting Sony had a Vita 2 in the works. Perhaps it was even ready to be announced. Of course, that didn’t happen. In a recent interview, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Andrew House put the final nail in the coffin with a statement on not only the Vita, but PlayStation’s current stance on handheld gaming in general.

House said that ultimately, the Vita did not perform well outside of Japan and Asia. He attributed this to the ubiquity of smartphones as the general public’s go-to handheld hardware. When asked about the Switch, House said that as far as Sony is concerned, that style of hardware does not make for a big enough market.

House said that Sony’s focus is not only on a “connected” gaming experience, but also a more broad approach to entertainment. This means the ability to appeal to multiple demographics through the living room-style, big screen experience. So while another handheld from Sony wasn’t ruled out entirely, a Vita 2 is not on anyone’s mind at the moment.
