Bethesda’s marketing team has been making waves with its advertisements for the upcoming Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. The latest video for the game, making its rounds on Twitter, is doubling down on the more “controversial” aspect of the game. It deals with a recent event that became something of a meme.
Due to current events in America, Wolfenstein’s Nazi-killing rhetoric is causing a stir on at least the internet gaming community. The latest ad states that “there is only one side,” then shows the player straight-up punching a Nazi enemy, bare-handed. It follows that up with, “if you are a Nazi GTFO.” This is a clear reference to the Nazi-punching political discourse that has been a thing more or less since the widely-distributed footage of Richard Spencer, an infamous white supremacist, getting punched in the face after the 2016 election.
Bethesda’s PR statements have been conflicting with this internet marketing a bit. They often reinforce that Wolfenstein II:The New Colossus has been in production since 2014 and any political messaging is largely coincidental. A recent statement from the game’s director, from an interview with GameSpot, seemed to express disappointment that the game has become topical and controversial.
