Chinese-made Contra Movie and TV Series Planned

Chinese-made Contra Movie and TV Series Planned

Earlier this year, Chinese media company Starlight Media and Konami teamed up to announce a multimedia project for Contra , the classic run and gun series that dates back to the NES. The announcement followed a mobile game that was made for the Chinese market in a partnership with Tencent, one of the biggest Chinese tech companies. Starlight Media’s projects are in the film and TV realm, and further announcements have been made regarding distribution.

A report on Kotaku recaps the original announcement, with a synopsis for the film project referencing plot ideas from both the English and Japanese versions of the original game. Some assets, including a poster and teaser trailer featuring the Eagle logo firing bullets to the tune of the original game’s 8-bit jingle, were also revealed around the time of the original announcement.

Now, more details have come, with official confirmations from both Starlight Media and Konami confirming that yes, this is a real, officially-licensed Contra project for both film and TV. Starlight Media also announced that plans are in place for worldwide release, including streaming. Whatever this ends up being, fans outside of China will tentatively be able to tune in.
