Epic Games Settle One Lawsuit, Continue Second

Fortnite creators Epic Games were in a bit of hot water recently when they took legal action against an alleged cheater who ended up being 14-years-old . The legal action that was taken against the young boy sparked a rebuttal from his mother. This letter has now been responded to by Epic Games. They stated that they did not know the age of the cheater until after the complaint was filed. They also wanted to make note that the mother revealed the name and address of her son, rather than the other way around.

Epic Games seems determined to bring legal action against the 14-year-old, despite a bit of bad press related to it. The chance still remains that the developer could make an agreement with the boy and his mother without having to go through the entire legal process of suing someone. They have said that they will not refer to the underaged defendant by his full name. They will only refer to him by his initials or not at all.

There was a second legal proceeding that was started at the same time. This one was against a user who went by the name Joreallean. This Fortnite player was accused of putting code into the game to cheat, which breached Epic Games’ copyright. This player was apparently banned on nine different occasions with different accounts, so Epic Games wanted to use them as an example for the rest of the Fortnite cheaters. They have come to an agreement with Joreallean saying that the user can no longer create, write, develop, advertise, promote, or distribute anything that will violate Epic Games’ copyrights on any of their current or future games. If Joreallean does so, they will be subject to a $5,000 fine.

It’s most likely that a similar outcome to the Joreallean case will happen with the 14-year-old, but only time will tell.
