Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Announced for Switch

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Announced for Switch

In the second year of the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo is continuing to pad the system’s library a bit with games from the Wii U that absolutely deserve a second chance anyway. And, if the numbers so far are any indication, this gimmick is working out pretty well for Nintendo. The next big game on this list is Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze , a game that was critically acclaimed, but ultimately suffered in being a Wii U game.

Not only is Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze coming to Switch, but it does so with a new playable character that also sort of doubles as a new game play mode. Funky Kong is making his playable debut in a Donkey Kong platformer, and his inclusion seems to double as a new take on Nintendo’s assistance modes for less skilled players. Funky Kong, using his surfboard, has more movement options on land and in water, and spikes don’t damage him.

In the Nintendo Direct footage, Funky is shown sailing through levels with agility not afforded to the more vulnerable characters, and it also shown working alongside others in the co-op mode. This means that playing as Funky, while a handicap, doesn’t prevent players of varying skill from playing together.

The Switch version of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is currently set for May 4, 2018.
