The writing has been on the wall for some time now, but the end is finally growing near. Toys R Us locations around the country are going to begin closing down, and 182 total will be completely closed by April 16, 2018. Toys R Us also owns Babies R Us, stores that combine both, and some outlet stores. Some of these will also be closing.
These closures are due to a Chapter 11 bankruptcy that Toys R Us filed for back in September 2017. At that time, it had 120 days to close a bunch of their stores. This obviously coincided with the holiday season, so they were given an extension. That bumped the store closures to the now final date of April 16. The chairman and CEO of Toys R Us, Dave Brandon, said that the company is closing these stores in an effort to emerge from bankruptcy as a more viable company. This of course remains to be seen, but who knows! Maybe Toys R Us will rise from the ashes of these closures.
