A new, updated version of Sonic Mania is coming to consoles, featuring new characters and a new retail SKU. Sega announced this during its Sonic the Hedgehog panel at the 2018 South by Southwest event. Other announcements included a new series of Sonic Mania animated shorts, and a tease at a new Sega or Sonic-themed racing game.
Sonic Mania Plus is coming summer 2018 and will have a bunch of new content. Encore mode is what Sega seems to be pushing the most, which modifies each of Sonic Mania’s original levels with yet-unannounced changes. Sonic Mania Plus also adds new playable characters: Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel. These two characters first appeared in the Japan-only arcade game SegaSonic the Hedgehog.
Sonic Mania Plus also boosts the competition mode up to four players. The new physical release (the original Sonic Mania was digital-only) features both a holographic slip cover and reversible art featuring alternate art based on old Sega Genesis/Mega Drive covers. A 32-page art book is also included. Sonic Mania Plus will costs $29.99, and owners of the original game will also be able to upgrade, although the price for that has not been announced.
