RIP Steam Machine: Valve Removes Them

It would appear that Valve’s Steam Machine has gone the way of the dodo. Sometime in this past month of March 2018, the Machines were removed from the Steam portal. It was first discovered by GamingOnLinux , who remarked that this wasn’t much of a surprise. Steam Machines had all sorts of problems that eventually lead to this demise.

Valve’s Steam Machine was marketed as a PC that you could use in your living room like a console. It had a dual intention of hoping to spark a Linux development/port industry. This simply wasn’t to be, as there just weren’t many games playable on Linux throughout the Steam Machine’s existence. Some of the Steam Machine creators started making Windows operating systems, or both, available towards the end, but it was too little too late.

There’s also the fact that Valve eventually released their Steam Link, which made owning a Steam Machine completely fruitless. The only reason a Steam Machine would have been an okay purchase would be if you didn’t already have a gaming PC. But seeing as how most of the target market did, they went for the Link instead, allowing them to play games from their PC on their television in the living room.

A lot of missteps came together to end the Steam Machine’s short life on Earth. You can still find some Steam Machines on Valve’s portal if you look hard enough . But these will most likely be removed soon.

The “hardware” tab on Steam now only shows the Steam Controller, HTC Vive, and Steam Link.
