Third-Party Switch Cable and Dock Requirements Detailed

Third-Party Switch Cable and Dock Requirements Detailed

Nintendo Switch users everywhere have been trying to find alternative ways to power their devices. This has caused a lot of problems, which has now led to Nintendo making official statements about what will (and won’t) work to charge your Switch.

Third-party docks and USB chargers are the sparking point for this clarification from Nintendo. Some users were experiencing total Switch death when they used third-party options. In the official Nintendo of Japan FAQ for the Switch, you can now see exactly what is necessary to avoid this. The charging cable that comes with each Nintendo Switch has a 56K OHM resistor in it. Any third-party options must have this. They also need to be USB-A or USB-C in order to avoid totally wasting your Switch.

Third-party docks and charging cables are great for those looking for something a little different from the official options. A lot of times, they’re equally popular due to an easier to swallow price point. Whatever the reason people are choosing third-party docks and cords over the Nintendo ones, it’s important to be informed. Now that Nintendo has officially clarified what needs to be used with their Switch systems, make sure you’re following those requirements.
