In Sydney, Australia, Jessica Estephan became the first woman ever to win a Magic: The Gathering Grand Prix event. Estephan, along with her teammates Ryan Lewis-Jonns and Lachlan Saunders, took home the victory in the Team Grand Prix among a pool of 350 entrants.
It’s important to note that the Magic: The Gathering Grand Prix events have been running since 1997. This victory is a good sign in the ongoing battle for inclusivity in geek and hobby spaces, such as competitive gaming. We’ve of course seen similar emergence of women competitors in video gaming spaces such as Overwatch and StarCraft in recent years as well, in terms of success and visibility.
The winning team, along with the second, third, and fourth place winners, have all won a spot in the Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour 25 th Anniversary event, which will be held in Minneapolis this coming August.
In relevant gaming news, Magic: The Gathering Arena , a fully digital version of the card game, is currently running a closed beta test.
