Official Minecraft Skins Infected with Malware

Official Minecraft Skins Infected with Malware

We all know the Internet is full of jerks, but it was taken to a whole new level recently. Cybersecurity firm Avast recently revealed that Minecraft skins infected with malware have been handed out to almost 50,000 players. These skins were downloaded via the official Minecraft website, so many who downloaded had no reason to suspect any trouble.

It’s unclear as to whether or not Microsoft knows which players were infected, and if they reached out to them. Especially since the only official response has come in the form of a seemingly copy/paste statement. In this statement Microsoft merely says that they have fixed the problem, and taken steps to prevent it happening again. They refer Minecraft players to feedback.minecraft.net to report any suspicious activity.

The malware that was included with many Minecraft skins would send emails to infected players. IGN reports that one such email read, “You Are Nailed, Buy A New Computer This Is A Piece of S**t.” This might seem like a small annoyance, but the more troubling effects of the malware include deleting backup data/system programs, and reformatting hard drives. If you downloaded any Minecraft skins lately, it would serve you well to run a virus scan to be sure you haven’t been infected.
