School Shooting Game Appears on Steam, Controversy Ensues

In what may be the most tasteless move in video games in 2018, a game intending to simulate a school shooting has been listed on Valve’s Steam platform. And, in  way that is not surprising in the least, people are not happy about it.

The game is called Active Shooter , and proclaims to be a “dynamic SWAT simulator in which dynamic roles are offered to players.” Of course this means you can not only play as SWAT, but also take control of the shooter. The game’s page also states a civilian survival mode will be added within a few days of release.

Infer Trust, a UK charity, is publicly challenging Valve to remove the game, citing of course the very real and constant occurrence of school shootings in reality. The developer asks people to not “take any of this seriously” in a very lame duck (and hastily written) addition to the Steam page, and points to games like Hatred as an ostensible example of something more problematic.
