Pokemon Quest Appears on the Switch

Pokemon Quest Appears on the Switch

During an event in Japan, the Pokemon Company announced two new Pokemon games, one coming later this year for the Switch, and one already out now for the Switch and coming later to mobile. The one out now is called Pokemon Quest , and it’s a “freemium” title with a cute art style and violent, real-time battles.

Pokemon Quest is set on Tumblecube Island and is an action-RPG. The player makes buddies with Pokemon by cooking, adds them to a team, equips them with special stones, then fights real-time battles that play out automatically, but with the player triggering special moves. There’s also a base-building component, and of course microtransactions.

Pokemon has a fairly substantial history of freemium or “free to start” games, and Pokemon Quest is the first to land on the Nintendo Switch. Previous efforts have shown up on both mobile platforms as well as the 3DS, so the precedent is alive and well. It’s also notable that this game has launched on Switch, but won’t find its way to Android or iOS until next month.
