There was some odd ambiguity during Microsoft’s E3 2018 press briefing, as Gears of War 5 was revealed and seemed to just be called “Gears 5” in the trailer. That said, press and media continued to call the game by its presumed full title, but now that’s going to have to change. In a Twitter exchange, The Coalition studio head Rod Fergusson confirmed that the game’s official, true title is in fact just Gears 5, as part of a new branding effort.
In an exchange with IGN editor Ryan McCaffrey, Fergusson said that while Gears of War is still the name of the franchise overall, the latest sequel is going to be Gears 5 “on the box” in order to line it up with a set of other titles, all of which were announced during the same E3 2018 conference. The set comprises Gears 5, Gears Pop, and Gears Tactics. Fergusson refers to the bunch as a “family of titles,” and that everyone calls the games Gears anyway so it “feels good to simplify.”
