Devil May Cry 5 Has Dynamic Music

The Devil May Cry 5 media drip is on point. Each individual interview reveals one extra tidbit the previous one didn’t, and we get to piece it all together to get a greater sense of what the game is as a whole. This time, an interview with Japanese outlet Gamespark led to some interesting information about the Devil May Cry 5 soundtrack, and how it relates to the player’s performance during combat.

Devil May Cry 5 producer Maki Okabe stated that as a player’s “style rating” increases, so does the complexity of the battle music. It’s “dynamic” in that way, and serves as an extra bonus outside the combat mechanics to encourage players to go for that higher rating. An example given is that one melody will transition into a second one, and even a background chorus may kick in.

In Devil May Cry games, players are rewarded in “style ratings” based on how creative they are during combat. It’s possible to mash through, but if they use a variety of techniques and extended combos, they will get a higher and higher rating and more points. This has led to a niche scene of style competitions and exhibitions, as players compete for the biggest and most creative combos within the deliberate limitations the game uses to enforce its systems.
