Capcom Drops Guns N’ Roses References in Mega Man X5

Rest in Peace, Duff McWhalen. Back when Mega Man X5 was released for the PlayStation, Capcom’s localization made a bizarre choice to localize all the boss names as references to the members of Guns N’ Roses. It was goofy and amusing at the time, but today we live in an age of purity, in which demand largely sides with preserving a work’s original intent as much as possible. To that end, Capcom has confirmed that the new port of Mega Man X5 , as part of the upcoming Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 , will be more faithfully translated.

This change was revealed by a video from Capcom Unity that was actually meant to showcase the collection’s X Challenge Mode, but of course observative fans noticed the name changes. GameSpot reached out to Capcom for comment and received confirmation. The statement said that the goal for the collections is authenticity, and that localizing the Mega Man X5 names back to what they were originally in Japan helps the “narrative cohesion” of the experience.
