FIFA 19 Will Indicate The Odds of Decent Loot Box Drops

FIFA 19 Will Indicate The Odds of Decent Loot Box Drops

Any game that has something novel to say about loot boxes is a game that is inevitably going to be discussed among gamers. That is because loot boxes are a controversial, potentially predatory practice that gamers find loathsome. Still, publishers love them and will do what they can to try to justify their presence or mitigate the disdain. I assume that is what EA was doing when it announced that FIFA 19 will disclose the odds of its loot boxes.

To me, this only sounds more like gambling, which was part of the debate to begin with. When players purchase packs in FIFA 19 , they will have an idea of what they are getting. According to Daryl Holt, Vice President of EA Sports, “You are getting a certain number of assets that are guaranteed – and we’re going to start to do pack odds disclosures that’ll show you the odds of what you might get.”

At this point in the news cycle, we have no idea “what you might get,” so I can’t really say how fair or unfair this practice might end up being. It also doesn’t sound like a far cry from FIFA 18, which also indicated, to a degree, what kinds of cards would come in packs. Or from trading card games which also frequently guarantee something like a single rare card in each pack. It’ll be interesting to see exactly how the concept manifests once the game releases.
