Bowser Jr. Has Destroyed the Mario Tennis Aces Metagame

Bowser Jr. Has Destroyed the Mario Tennis Aces Metagame

As many players have compared Nintendo and Camelot’s Mario Tennis Aces to a fighting game, there’s a lot that comes with that label. This includes competition drama, and there’s a whole heck of a lot of it right now. The drama is surrounding one character in particular, who has completely destroyed any sense of balance in the Mario Tennis Aces scene. That character is Bowser Jr.

While Mario Tennis Aces has only been out for a few weeks, the community has already settled on utter contempt for Bowser’s insufferable offspring.  From comically-exaggerated hate to outright refusal to play with others who want to use the character, a line is clearly being drawn in the sand. At a recent competition, while a Yoshi player ultimately won, the third place winner infamously called the game “trash” and players “dumb” for wanting to play Mario Tennis Aces competitively, after getting third with Bowser Jr. without trying.

The character just seems to have all of the defensive options, with no drawbacks to counter them. He can charge shots without losing speed, has long reach, and great meter gain. Playing Bowser Jr. requires so little effort to be successful, the scene is now looking to ban the character if the game isn’t hit with a balance update soon. The game notes that updates are part of the plan, but no announcements have been made as of yet.
