Nintendo Follows Lawsuit with Attack on Game Boy Emulator

Nintendo Follows Lawsuit with Attack on Game Boy Emulator

Nintendo has been getting a lot of Internet attention over a super aggressive lawsuit filed against the owner of a couple popular rom sites . The sites have both been taken down since, and the lawsuit seeks millions of dollars worth of damages. Today, TorrentFreak has reported that Nintendo isn’t done yet, as the company has also set its sights on a Game Boy emulator that was hosted on GitHub.

While emulators aren’t generally vulnerable to legal targeting, something that has developed over the years is browser-based emulation. Software like the subject of today’s story allowed users to play Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games directly in their browser, without having to download or install anything. This option is popular for people with lower-power computers or work machines.

While GitHub houses plenty of similar emulators, Nintendo had this one struck down via DMCA. GitHub has to comply with these, as hosting roms does violate Terms of Service agreements. Nintendo is also considering taking legal action against the author of the software.

Apparently, the takedown came on the same day as the previous lawsuits were filed, although the two have little to do with one another. This could be a sign of more aggressive behavior from Nintendo, although it isn’t the first time such actions have been taken by the company.
