Hacker Arrested for Messing with DRM Company

DRM, short for Digital Rights Management, is a contentious issue in the gaming world. Often, it’s a useful way for developers to prevent piracy. Sometimes, it’s an obnoxious hurdle for legitimate consumers that, in some cases, can even break the game. One of the most popular creators of DRM is called Denuvo, and a notorious hacker is now in trouble for messing with them.

When I say trouble, I mean that he has been arrested by Bulgarian police. Voksi, as he is commonly known, stated that “It finally happened,” and added “I can’t say it wasn’t expected. Denuvo filed a case against me to the Bulgarian authorities.”

Kotaku obtained a statement that revealed that the arrest was a result of effort from the Bulgarian Cybercrime Unit and Irdeto, which is the parent company for Denuvo. These are the risks you take when your hacking interferes with the profits of a large company, I guess. And it looks like Voksi knew what he was getting into. He does, however, say that “maybe someone else can continue my fight.” To some, it’s a worthy endeavor.
