Atari VCS Can Be Upgraded, Run PC Games in Its Sandbox

The Atari VCS appeared at E3 2019, getting all sorts of details about the system. The most recent version of the system appeared. It turns out a basic model, which won’t have any controllers, will be $249.99. (Controllers are $49.99 each.) People will be able to go with 400 or 800 models, with the former having 4GB RAM and the latter 8GB. They will also be able to get an exclusive Atari 800 VCS Kevlar Gold model with controller for $389.99 at Walmart , an Onyx All-In Bundle for $379.99 at GameStop , or a Black Walnut All-In Bundle for $389.99 from Atari .

While no details about games were provided, Atari did explain how people will be able to play them. There will be a built-in Atari Store, where people can buy games made specifically for the system. (Apps will also be available.) People who want to play PC games on it will need to have a USB boot drive with the operating system of their choice on it, like Windows or Linux, then head into Sandbox Mode. Once there, people can play games from other operating systems on the Atari VCS.

Atari also went over the different customization options possible with an Atari VCS. The reason one model is a basic one with no controllers is because it is compatible with some existing Bluetooth and USB controllers. (It was not confirmed which models were compatible.) People can also replace the RAM and SSD to increase its capabilities.

The Atari VCS will be released in March 2020.
