Nintendo Reveals Details About Wi-Fi

None

Nintendo has given more details about their plans for Wi-Fi for the DS. Consumers will not be required to pay any monthly fees to play first-party games. A Nintendo-branded USB Wi-Fi access point will be on shelves with the first Wi-Fi enabled game for gamers who don’t have a wireless internet connection already set up.

There will be two types of service to choose from. Players can play against others who have performed at the same level as them in their offline play or create a list of friends.

Gamers will be able to play online for free at high street stores equipped with Wi-Fi antennae across the country. Nintendo is also looking into free Wi-Fi hotspot connections with telecom companies and hopes to close the deal by the end of the year.

Nintendo has worked to create a secure environment for players and will not support voice chat. A Nintendo Europe product manager explained, “We need to be entirely confident that there can be no untoward activity.”

“It is our goal that all consumers who purchase a Wi-Fi enabled game will try Wi-Fi connection at least once,” Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo, stated at the Tokyo Games Show.
