The name of the next Xbox console could be Xbox 8, if speculation over a recent court ruling is to be believed.
Today, Microsoft won the rights to a series of Xbox-related domain names from a Chinese resident known as “Cheng Juan.” Disputed URLs included XboxPhone.com, XboxTablet.com, XboxLiveTV.com, XboxCompanion.com, Xbox8.us and Xbox8.org.
It’s those last two domains that have set the Internets a-blazin’, with rampant reports arising that propose the next Xbox to be called either the aforementioned Xbox 8 or possibly Xbox ∞ (Xbox Infinity).
Of course, the name is pure rumor for now, and it’s more likely that Microsoft was protecting its IPs than anything else, what with Windows 8 set to launch later this year and all. Previous codenames for the future system have included Durango and the ever-popular Xbox 720, but the truth of the matter is that we still can’t really say what the system will be called with any certainty. Xbox Infinity does have a nifty little ring to it, though.
